Marcelle Torczyner, 1918-2007

It is with much sorrow that we report that Marcelle Torczyner, the beloved mother of Denise Wiseman and mother-in-law of our congregation's leader Sam Wiseman, passed away early Saturday, December 22nd. She died peacefully in her sleep at home, just weeks short of her 90th birthday.

Marcelle was of course instrumental in the rebuilding of Temple Beth-El after moving to Wyoming from New
York. Those who knew her in her better health describe her as an exceptionally vibrant and
intelligent woman.

Marcelle will be buried alongside her husband Harry in Queens, New York City, under the auspices of Congregation Shearith Israel, a Spanish and Portuguese Orthodox synagogue in Manhattan.

Mike Smith has agreed to perform Shabbos services at Temple Beth-El next weekend (Friday December 28th) and
open the Temple for Sunday school (December 30th).
Please come out and show your support for the temple that Marcelle cared so much about.

Another Set of Wonderful High Holy Days with Rabbi Silverman

This year, our High Holy Day services were again conducted by Rabbi David L. Silverman, who generously brought his kind, learned presence to our Temple. His services were attended by a good showing of regular congregants, as well as some new faces. When he wasn't leading his thoughtful, heartful Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur services alongside our spiritual leader Sam Wiseman, Rabbi Silverman spent his time dining and relaxing with us, engaging us with stories from his long rabbinical career.

Rabbi Silverman, who first led our High Holy Day services in 2006, is a graduate of the Yeshiva Or Torah, Jerusalem, and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. He taught for many years at the University of Rochester and at Bucknell University, and has served as Chaplain for the State of New York.

We thank Rabbi Silverman for again making the trip from his current home in Florida to be with us here in Casper. He has been taken to heart by the congregation, and we look forward to seeing him every year at the holiday season.

We also thank Betty Walts, who for the seventh year provided her skilled accompaniment on the Temple organ, as well as Richard Cohen on bass and Pamela Glasser on the French horn for their individual renditions of the Kol Nidre.

Temple Beth-El has brought in religious leaders from outside Wyoming for the past nine years for the High Holy Days. Chaim Feifel, a cantor who resides in Israel, became part of our Casper family and conducted these services until 2006, when age curtailed his spirited travel energy. Chaim has taught cantorial writing, theory and singing at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, where he has received many honors.
